My friend Rona had a puli, or Hungarian sheepdog, that was born 48 years ago. She loved that dog and named him Cinco because he was born on May 5, Cinco de Mayo, a holiday in Mexico.
Pulis are beautiful dogs. Some owners would let the long hair grow to cover the eyes and to reach the ground; and groom them meticulously. They are stunningly beautiful dogs.

But Rona decided to trim her dog’s long hair to manageable length. Cinco went wherever Rona went, even to a trout farm. A trout was given to Rona and Cinco decided he was going to carry the bag of trout.
This is the only photo available of Cinco. I had to create a sculpture of Cinco from this one photo.

I started with a clump of clay.

I formed it into the rough shape of Cinco dipping his head and glancing at me.

I added the plastic bag containing the trout to the sculpture.

I painted Cinco’s fur in black, then added streaks of white.

The fur on Cinco was not shiny. But his wet nose was glistening, so I painted a glossy glaze on the nose.

When the sculpture emerged from the kiln, it looked like a happy dog carrying his treasure home.

I sent this sculpture to Rona by mail. She just received it and she was so happy with it she screamed and cried.
This made my day.
